SMOFlipid® 20% - Lipid Injectable Emulsion
Product Description
SMOFlipid® 20% is a sterile, white, homogeneous lipid emulsion designed for intravenous nutrition. It is a unique combination of four different oils: refined soybean oil (6%), medium chain triglycerides (6%), refined olive oil (5%), and fish oil rich in omega-3 acids (3%). The emulsion is intended for single use and is administered via intravenous infusion into a peripheral or central vein.Key Features & Uses
-
Parenteral Nutrition: Indicated for adult patients who cannot receive oral or enteral nutrition. Provides essential fatty acids, omega-3 fatty acids, and energy as part of a parenteral nutrition regimen.
-
Energy Source: High caloric density, with each 100 mL providing 840 kJ (200 kcal).
-
Four-Oil Blend:
-
Soybean oil: Source of essential fatty acids, particularly omega-6 (linoleic acid) and omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid).
-
Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT): Rapidly oxidized to provide immediately available energy.
-
Olive oil: Supplies energy through mono-unsaturated fatty acids, which are less prone to peroxidation.
-
Fish oil: Rich in EPA and DHA, important structural components of cell membranes.
-
Important Safety Information
-
Contraindications: Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to fish, egg, soybean, or peanut protein, or any ingredient of the product. Contraindicated in severe hyperlipidemia, severe liver or renal insufficiency (without hemofiltration or dialysis), severe coagulation disorders, acute shock, or other unstable conditions.
-
Adverse Reactions: Common: slight increase in body temperature. Uncommon: lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, chills. Rare: hypersensitivity reactions, hypotension, hypertension, dyspnea, priapism.
-
Fat Overload Syndrome: Overdose or impaired triglyceride elimination may cause fever, hyperlipidemia, hepatomegaly, jaundice, and coagulation disorders. If symptoms occur, infusion should be stopped; symptoms usually resolve after discontinuation.
-
Monitoring: Monitor triglyceride levels; concentrations should not exceed 3 mmol/L during or after infusion.
-
Drug Interactions: Heparin may temporarily decrease triglyceride clearance. Vitamin K1 in soybean oil is unlikely to interfere with coumarin derivatives. High plasma lipid levels may affect some laboratory blood tests.
